GS Plus Ltd are proud to announce that two of their school chefs were crowned winners of the Secondary and Primary Caterers of the Year at the EDUcatering Excellence Awards 2017!

Held at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington on 10th October 2017, the prestigious ceremony brought together schools, establishments and organisations across the country to celebrate the achievements of those within the school catering sector.

The event was attended by our two finalists and their respective school head teachers, various GS Plus staff and our Chair the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Peter Brooks.

Guests were served a three course meal and the great entertainment was provided by the students of the Sylvia Young Theatre School. Only twelve exclusive awards were given out at the national ceremony.

Primary School Caterer of the Year – Flavio Hernandez

GS Plus’s school chef Flavio Hernandez from Charlton Manor Primary School was named, “Primary School Caterer of the Year” for his outstanding accomplishments in the school’s meal service, which has resulted in increased uptake in school meals and significant reinvigoration of the overall service provided.

Flavio came to Charlton Manor in 2014, bringing with him his boundless energy, enthusiasm and creativity. His achievements include introducing a VIP table meal service which the children happily take part in, utilising the school’s garden for ingredients in the school’s menu and helping to build a specially equipped classroom to provide cooking lessons for the children.

Flavio has also helped to promote healthy eating by reducing sugar intake in school meals and increasing the consumption of fruit through his creativity in presentation. His passion and commitment can be seen by the highly enthusiastic and positive reception from both the children and staff. In recognition of his devotion, the schoolchildren at Charlton Manor have honoured Flavio by producing a portrait painting of him in the school playground!

Flavio has also written a cook book, which was recently released for parents/carers and children, so they can all enjoy his unique and creative recipes at home.

Secondary School Caterer of the Year – Paul Yung

GS Plus’s second winner of the night was Paul Yung from Woolwich Poly Secondary School, who was awarded, “Secondary School Caterer of the Year 2017.” Paul joined our catering department in 2015 and quickly helped to transform the service at the school through his commitment to successfully bringing about change and improvement.

He effectively established an excellent catering team and helped to increase meal uptake by almost 20% through improving the quality of food and providing a pleasant experience for all patrons. Paul also assisted in implementing the rebranding of our catering service as, “Incito” whereby he and his team effectively contributed to the marketing and revamping of the whole dining area. Paul actively promotes the well-being of all pupils and teaches cookery to students with behavioural challenges, demonstrating how his dedication transcends beyond providing a high quality meal service.

We are delighted that two of our school chefs were winners this year and believe they are truly deserving of their accolades. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for their continued dedication and energy that they both bring with them every day.

Congratulations to both Flavio and Paul!
